Film Review - Adam (2009)

Although I'm not generally a big fan of most rom-coms, I can't resist the odd chick flick here and there, especially ones that have a bit more heart to them then the standard fare. Hence what caught my attention about Adam when looking at the Sundance nominees last year. Unfortunately I missed it while it was showing at cinemas (limited release FAIL) but I've finally gotten around to watching it, better late than never!

Adam follows the romance between a young man with Asperger's Synderome (Hugh Dancy) and his new neighbour, Beth (Rose Byrne). More than just a good chick flick, the film genuinely tugs at the heartstrings as it follows the journey of Adam as he learns more about both Beth and the ways of the world. To sum it up, the film is sweet, heartbreaking and completely touching, made absolutely perfect by a beautiful soundtrack featuring songs by Joshua Radin, among others. The DVD will be released in the US on the 2nd February and in the UK on the 15th February.

Also, for anybody who hasn't heard any of Joshua Radin's music before (where have you been?!) you can listen to what I believe is one of his most beautiful songs Everything'll Be Alright (Will's Lullaby) right here. Both of his albums are absolutely fantastic and if you're a fan of the likes of Damien Rice, Iron & Wine and Mat Kearney then I would definitely recommend them.

i could've settled down in paris

A little something I drew based on the short film Tour Eiffel from Paris Je T'aime, an anthology of short films directed by some of this generation's best directors including the likes of the Coen brothers, Wes Craven and Alfonso Cuarón. The drawing didn't turn out too well (I guess that's what happens when you're doodling with pens that have half ran out while watching TV!) but Paris Je T'aime itself is absolutely fantastic and I would definitely recommend it to any film buffs out there.

Tour Eiffel, which this drawing is based on, is arguably the most creative, original and entertaining of the short films. It tells the story of a male and a female mime who meet while in prison and soon fall in love. It's a great story that is brilliantly directed and acted and will definitely put a smile on your face.

A test shot of one of my family's two pet cats, Tigger, from when I bought my new camera. For those of you familiar with photoshop, the slightly dreamy effect was created using curves and multiple layers set to desaturate, exclusion and softlight, all set to between 5 and 20% opacity.

One of the pioneers of the indie music scene, there's no denying that Death Cab For Cutie were one of the best bands around in the late ninties and early noughties (sure they're still around today but have they really done anything worth listening to since Plans?) What made them so great? Well their songs were pretty damn catchy for starters, not to mention that they were brilliant live, but what really sealed the deal was their quirky, cute and completely random poster art. This is my tribute to Death Cab, a hand drawn version of this amazing piece by artist Tara McPherson. Apologies for the quality and stretched-out look, I don't own a scanner so had to upload the image via photo and my attempts to improve the quality in photoshop resulted in it looking a little over-sharpened!
